Hercus: Sheep on Tussock Grassland
نویسنده
چکیده
One important area for which little experimental evidence is available is the snowgrass country. There is a strong body of opinion that in the snowgrass the combined effects of fire and grazing have been responsible for deterioration in vegetative cover and stability. It seems likely that changes in the boundari~s between the snowgrass and fescue communiti~s have been due to, or aggravated by, the COwbined pressures of fire and sheep grazing. The snowgrass communities have been opened up during the time the land has been farmed and in the more stable localities there has been invasion of the inter-tussock area.

Changes in vegetation states in grazed and ungrazed Mackenzie Basin grasslands, New Zealand, 1990–2000
Changes in vegetation from 1990 to 2000 were examined at 10 high country localities, representing four grassland types: fescue tussock (Festuca novae-zelandiae), snow tussock (Chionochloa rigida), red tussock (C. rubra), and silver tussock (Poa cita). At each locality, three treatments were established: ambient sheep+rabbit grazing, rabbit grazing only, and no grazing. The mutivariate methods o...
متن کاملHarris and O'connor: Grazing Behaviour of Sheep on a High-country Range
The distribution of sheep was monitored for three years on part of an unimproved high-country summer range composed of several land units with different phases of degraded tall tussock and short tussock grassland. Sheep distribution was found to be non-random and to vary seasonally. Available dry matter and water content of inter-tussock vegetation were monitored on well vegetated land units fo...
متن کاملThe Maintenance of Poa Cita Grassland by Grazing
The effect of protection from sheep grazing on indigenous plant species in relatively mesic, strongly modified Poa cita grassland, was examined using paired grazed and ungrazed sites. Ungrazed sites, fenced at times ranging from four to more than 24 years ago, had fewer species, lower indigenous cover and lower tussock density than adjacent grazed sites. The dominance of adventive species, part...
متن کاملBurning in a New Zealand Snow-tussock Grassland: Effects on Soil Microbial Biomass and Nitrogen and Phosphorus Availability
Although fire is a controversial management tool in New Zealand tussock grasslands, it can be an important factor in their pastoral use (Basher, Meurk and Tate, 1990). Its effects on various properties of these ecosystems have, consequently, been widely studied. Most biochemical studies of the effects of burning on grassland soils have concentrated on the availability of nutrient elements, espe...
متن کاملRecovery of short tussock and woody species guilds in ungrazed Festuca novae-zelandiae short tussock grassland with fertiliser or irrigation
In a Festuca novae-zelandiae short tussock grassland in South Island, New Zealand, we tested the propositions (1) that present regional trends in vascular plant species-richness in tussock grasslands are independent of current pastoral management, and (2) that grazing retards the invasion and dominance of nonnative species, particularly where soil resources are not limiting. Sheep and rabbit-gr...
